Hawkers strike relocation deal in Nakuru town

Hawkers in Nakuru have agreed to relocate to new areas to pave way for the ongoing cleanup of the central business district by the county government.

Lawyers Wilfred Konosi for the county government and Fred Nyagaka for the 1,764 hawkers said negotiations had yielded fruit, with 1,353 hawkers allocated new spaces. The remaining 411 would get new locations in the next two weeks.

The consent, also signed by lawyer Kahiga Waitindi for the Nakuru business community, will also see a probe conducted on spaces affecting 107 hawkers said to have been interfered with by a group calling itself Mboi-Kamiti.

Judge Maureen Odera welcomed the consent, saying it would bring sanity within the town and enable residents conduct business within confines of the law.

The court heard that a list of allotees would be tabled in court on February 4 and that each beneficiary would get an identification allotment card for the new stations, allowing them to pay for daily fees and annual business permits.

Earlier, Mr Nyagaka had protested emergence of a criminal gang that was allocating space to hawkers, raising fears that the county government was using goons.

The pact brings to an end three-weeks of acrimony that saw armed security men patrol Nakuru streets as county officials cleared all structures on parking bays, outside banks and shops and those constructed on backstreet allays.

The agreement also saw the establishment of Nakuru’s first hawkers’ market at Nasher Square, where the county plans to inject Sh25 million to improve facilities by putting up sheds and toilets as well as paving blocks.

The traders had in December threatened to boycott paying rates and business permits until hawkers were removed from outside their premises.
